ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Jellyfish, oranges, flowers, grasses in the sunlight are some of the original sources of inspiration for the scarves - forms and shapes in the natural world delight and intrigue. More recently I have experimented with balancing a single stylised natural form with a geometric form to establish a basic pattern which can be used for a series of scarves, each one being different in colour combination. Some might be to do with contrasts and happy clashes, others might be to do with warm and cold colours working together, others might be more subtle with just a hint of edge. A simple pattern can have a completely different feel depending on the other pattern that is established by the colours.
Finally and by no means incidentally, there is the silk itself and the steaming which brings out the essential quality of the dyes and restores the texture and radiance of the material, now impregnated with colour and pattern. It is a process which never ceases to delight and excite me and I hope some of this is reflected in the scarf.
